    Description

A VINTAGE PIECE OF TOMMY KAKINUMA(1908-1982) CANADIAN ART POTTERY - PENGUIN.
Thomas Kakinuma, born in Japan in 1908, emigrated to the West Coast of Canada in 1937. After some soul searching, Kakinuma turned to his love of art as a way of making a living and ultimately became a very successful and creative working artist and professor. He died in 1982.
His work is characterized by rustic textures and abstract features, that make his body of work the perfect contrast to the clean Scandinavian lines of classic mid-century modern environments. A great many of his figurines are representations of the avian world - roosters, hens, owls, penguins- but not to the total exclusion of many other creatures.
Overall, Thomas Kakinuma's Art Pottery is highly-collectible. His work is both playful and worthy of belonging in many serious Art Pottery collections.
This wonderful penguin is a worthy example of Kakinuma's mastery as a modernist potter. It also reinforces his love of animals, with a particular fondness for birds. The lines are strong, life-like but spate and the colors are earthy and realistic - gold and charcoal. The matte finish completes the piece perfectly.
A wonderful sculpture and work of art.
    In perfect condition.
    Measurements: 9” high, 4 1/2” wide, 3” deep.
